Public Worship as Manifestation of a New Age of Theo-Politics in the Theology of John Owen
John Owen’s eschatological vision impacted why he said what he said about various topics of theology and their relationship to worship. First, an age of latter-day glory was on the horizon; the evidence was pure worship according to Scripture. Second, the believers’ justification frees them from Old Covenant regulations for worship and all man-made regulations; an age was coming in which this would be experienced practically. Third, the final High Priest has abolished all Old Covenant liturgical institutions with their earthly ordinances and ushered in a heavenly, Spiritual worship. According to the PhD-research by Daniel Hyde, therefore all man-made shadows of that old priesthood such as vestments were to end as the age of glory loomed.
Hyde: “The Triune God by means of the ascended Christ through the Holy Spirit has gifted ministers with public prayer as the latter-day glory was drawing near. In sum, if the Spirit, then no need of the Book of Common Prayer.”
