This volume for Theodor Dieter is dedicated to the ecumenical challenges of contemporary Luther research. Renowned international experts, especially from Germany and the USA, contribute current research results and ecumenical points of view to this volume.
Constitutive for ecumenical dialogue is to be aware of one’s own tradition, as »differentiating consensus« is only achievable on this base. Both are part of the basic principles of ecumenism developed at the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg that have made some of the ecumenical progress of recent decades possible. This volume for Theodor Dieter, the long-time director of the Institute, is dedicated to the ecumenical challenges of contemporary Luther research. Renowned international experts, especially from Germany and the USA, contribute current research results and ecumenical points of view to this volume, which goes back to a conference at the Strasbourg Institute in March 2022.

Dr. Theodor Dieter, Jahrgang 1951, studierte Evangelische Theologie und Philosophie in Heidelberg und Tübingen. Er war Pfarrer der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Württemberg und von 1994 bis 2018 Forschungsprofessor am Institut für Ökumenische Forschung in Straßburg, von 1997 bis 2018 dessen Direktor. Forschungs- und Tätigkeitsschwerpunkte sind die Theologie Martin Luthers vor ihrem spätmittelalterlichen Hintergrund sowie der lutherisch/römisch-katholische und der lutherisch-mennonitische Dialog. Dieter ist Träger des Joseph-Ratzinger-Preises (2017) und Ehrendoktor der Universitäten Erfurt und Leuven (Belgien). Derzeit arbeitet er an einer Edition von Texten zum Ablassstreit.
