Nathan C.J. Hood Winner of Douglas Murray Prize

10 December 2025

RRR and its Douglas Murray Prize adjudication panel is pleased, in accord with the prize-guidelines, to announce the winner of the prize (£1000) for RRR 23 (2021): Nathan C.J. Hood.

NATHAN C. J. HOOD has won the prize for his article in RRR 23 no. 2 (2021): 151-69 entitled “Metrical Psalm-Singing and Emotion in Scottish Protestant Affective Piety, 1560–1650”.

The prize committee comprised by Bruce Gordon (Yale), Charlotte Methuen (Glasgow) and Anthony Milton (Sheffield) had the following to say on this article:

We appreciated the use of a range of sources to explore Scots’ emotional engagement with psalm singing. Hood is able to demonstrate that psalm singing was recognised by Scots in various contexts and across the generations to engender deep emotional responses which enhanced their experience of faith.

This is in fact the final year of the prize being awarded and we are very grateful to Douglas Murray’s widow and estate for their generosity in awarding the prize.
