10 December 2025

RRR and its Ian Hazlett Prize adjudication panel is pleased, in accord with the prize-guidelines, to announce the winner of the prize (£500) for RRR 24 (2022):  Alexander Batson.

ALEXANDER BATSON, Assistant-Professor at the University of Texas in Austin, won the prize for his article in RRR 24 no. 1 (2022): 23-43 entitled “Philip Melanchthon’s Humanist Politics: Greek Scholarship in a Time of Confessional Crisis”.

The prize committee comprised by Bruce Gordon (Yale), Charlotte Methuen (Glasgow) and Anthony Milton (Sheffield) had the following to say on this article:

We found this a fascinating study of the intersection between Philip Melanchthon’s engagement with classical Greek texts and the political situations with which he was confronted.  Batson shows the way in which Melanchthon’s humanist interests informed and were informed by his theological responses to those political situations

The Ian Hazlett Prize inaugurated by the Society for Reformation Studies is a new prize in honour of William Ian P. Hazlett, Professor Emeritus of Ecclesiastical History at the University of Glasgow, former President of the Society for Reformation Studies and for many years Editor of Reformation & Renaissance Review.
