Le style hébraïsant dans les paraphrases bibliques françaises de Marot à Chassignet
Some Hebraisms are common in the French language ever since Mediaeval times. In the Renaissance, the revival of Hebrew studies allows for a better access to the languages of the Bible. The repertoire of Hebraisms broadens through the influence of the Reformation authors who reproduce the syntax of phrases originating from the Geneva Bible and Marot’s Psalms. The authors of the Counter-Reformation rigorously strived to replace Marot’s psalter with a Catholic version. There are many reasons to pursue a Hebraisation of French poetry: reconnecting with the language of a lost unity, allowing French language to mirror Scriptures’ light, or proving that David and Solomon were rhetoricians just as talented as the classical authors.
