Call for Book Chapters on: Religion in Egodocuments

Seeking chapters for an edited volume on “Religion in early modern egodocuments”. The publication is to appear as a volume in the Brill series on egodocuments and any relevant study of the presence of religion/faith in documents, which were written in the first person and contain “I” will be considered.

Volume

Following a successful and thought provoking conference on “Writing the Transcendental”, which took place in March at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, we are working on a volume devoted to all types of religious entries in egodocuments in the early modern period (16th through 18th centuries).

We are interested in:

Expressions of faith in egodocuments
Descriptions of religions and religious rituals, events, behaviors, gatherings and alike
Pilgrimages and their accounts in egodocuments (both the spiritual and physical descriptions)
Elucidations of experiences of religious rituals, events
Presentation and interpretation of religious differences and/or conflicts
Religious motivations of undertaken actions and subsequent entry of relevant passages into egodocuments

The above are examples, but do not exhaust the plethora of possible topics and their presentations.

Please bear in mind two principles: [1] these papers must be based on egodocuments, [2] these egodocuments have been produced in the early modern period (16th through 18th centuries).

Proposals and Deadline

Please send a 300 word proposals with a short cv to Jakub Basista (history professor at the Jagiellonian University, Kraków) at Jakub Basista or Michaël Green (history professor at the University of Lodz and Director of the Centre for Self-Narratives) by the end of October 2026.

The deadline for chapters will be end of January 2027 (with possible individual extensions). The book is to be published with Brill in 2028.
