Interconfessional Exchanges and Literature in Early Modern Hungary (16–18th Century)

09 December 2019

The Institute of Hungarian Language and Literature of the University of Miskolc, the Regional Committee of Miskolc of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the MTA BTK Lendület Long Reformation in Eastern Europe (1500–1800) Research Group organised a conference dedicated to the study of early modern interconfessional exchanges.

The conference taking as its major reference the timeframe of the long Hungarian Reformation (circa 1500–1800) provided a survey of case studies reflecting upon how the four denominations had interacted and influenced the development of early modern culture and society. Each section was followed by discussions that allowed further inquiry and a more detailed critical reflection.

The findings of this conference reinforced the idea that the systematic study of interconfessionalism should go beyond the description of certain practices of borrowings detected in early modern print books; scholars should engage in exploring the social and cultural dimensions as well, of this historical phenomenon.

The need for new methodologies and a better use of unpublished manuscript sources has also been accepted as valid conclusions of the debate alongside with the proposal to re-evaluate the concept of interconfessional exchanges within the concept of the long Reformation.

The written versions of the papers given at this conference will be edited and published by the end of 2020.
