(Un)chained Knowledge – Dieric Bouts Festival

The exhibition in KU Leuven’s University Library shows you in an illuminating way what role science played and plays in the discussion about fake news, misleading information, and (un)reliable sources.

Fake news, censorship, and information around 1500 and today

Through unique objects and stories, the exhibition (Un)chained Knowledge, will offer the visitor a look behind the scenes of fake news, censorship, and information, reliable or not, around 1500 up until today. You will discover that (in)accessibility of knowledge was as much an issue then as it is now. And that the wide distribution of books had as great an impact centuries ago as the dominance of the internet in our time.

The exhibition in the University Library shows you in an illuminating way what role science played and plays in the discussion about fake news, misleading information, and (un)reliable sources. (Un)chained Knowledge explores these themes from a contemporary and refreshing angle. Visitors can actively participate and are encouraged to reflect on the themes offered. For that reason, the exhibition seamlessly fits into the program of the Leuven city festival New Horizons. Dieric Bouts Festival. The festival wants to expand your horizons, entirely in the spirit of the 15th-century painter Dieric Bouts. Bouts was an artist who questioned the world around him and looked at society with an open mind. In celebration of the festival, Dieric Bouts will be brought back from the late Middle Ages to present day using methods of artificial intelligence. Next to contemporary voices of a journalist, an expert on fake news and censorship, and an influencer, Bouts himself will also be seen and heard in this exhibition brimming with experience and new horizons.
