Sixteenth-century Italian reformer Girolamo Zanchi’s commentary on Philippians represents an important contribution to the history of Reformed exegesis and theology.
Available for the first time in English translation, Girolamo Zanchi’s Commentary on the Apostle Paul’s Epistle to the Philippians is a foundational work for a Reformed reading of Philippians. It showcases the exegetical skills and methods of early Reformed orthodoxy, offers timely wisdom for godly living, and sheds light on the formulation of Reformed Christology, especially in its extended engagement with Philippians 2:5-11. Accordingly, the commentary showcases the exegetical underpinnings of Zanchi’s theological writings. More broadly, this work set the stage for later Reformed theologians like Francis Turretin, Petrus van Mastricht, and Herman Bavinck, who often followed Zanchi’s lead and have increasingly become conversation partners for Reformed theologians, pastors, and lay Christians in the twenty-first century.
