How did the Dutch language develop over the centuries into the third largest Germanic language? In this volume, Jelle Stegeman describes this process against the background of the historical and social innovations in the Low Countries and the former colonies.
In doing so, he questions the newest insights in the historiography of the Dutch language and language culture. Quotations from a wide variety of texts, including the Plakkaat van Verlatinghe, letters by Rembrandt and Van Gogh, and Provo’s “White Bicycle Plan”, illustrate the use of language throughout history. In this way book forms not only a thorough but also an exciting biography of the Dutch language.
