May 5, 2025 marks the 500th anniversary of the death of Frederick the Wise. On this occasion, the life of this Saxon elector, best known as the protector of Martin Luther, will be shed new light for a broader audience.
Only the last years of Frederick’s reign were overshadowed by the Luther cause, who also left deep marks in the empire, territory and church in other fields: as a foreign politician, university founder, art patron and relic collector. Since around forty years have passed since the last major biography, the presentation can draw on a wealth of recent research and numerous sources that have been newly developed since then.
