New perspectives on Luther and Philosophy, including critical receptions of Luther and the Reformation in contemporary philosophy, has been a topic of considerable discussion over the last years. The topic is addressed by two volumes published at Mohr Siebeck, but also by recent monographs and entries in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosopy on Martin Luther and Luther’s Influence on Philosophy, both written by Robert Stern.

Online Seminar

On Friday Nov 6 th at 5:00 pm CET, Northwestern University and the University of Oslo invite scholars and students worldwide to an online seminar on this topic, with contributions from Robert Stern, Jennifer Hockenbery, Theodor Dieter and Jennifer Powell McNutt. They will discuss and comment on the articles presented in the two books that broadly address the topic of Luther and philosophy from respectively, the medieval influences on Luther’s thought and the reception of Luther in the history of modern western philosophy. There will also be time for questions and further discussion.

Double Book Launch

The occasion for this seminar is a Double Book Launch of The Reformation of Philosophy, edited by Marius Timmann Mjaaland (University of Oslo) and The Medieval Luther, edited by Christine Helmer (Northwestern University), both published in 2020 by Mohr Siebeck.
