Two days of conference in the heart of Geneva made it clear that money unites scholars, since the topic of Thoughts and Practices on Money in Early Modern Christianity was approached by scholars from various disciplines.
The second day of the conference took place at the Paroisse de Saint-Pierre. It started with a lecture by Niels de Bruijn (Leuven) on the Jesuit Luis de Molina and his views on what he calls the “error” of John Wyclif. Besides Molina, many other names passed by in the lectures of the day: Voetius, Maresius, Fenelon, Weber, Pope Leo X, Luther, Flacius Illyricus, showing something of the variety of the papers. Sometimes lectures complemented each other, which can be seen as a contribution to deepening the study of the topic. The lectures also went further abroad: from Switzerland, France, the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary for example to the East Indies at the end of the sixteenth century.
The approach of the topic from various disciplines proved to be very successful, so that one could say: money unites scholars.
The “usury” question was discussed at length, as well as the different views hitherto, which also related to the fact Latin word usura can be translated in two different ways: usury and interest.
We look forward to the proceedings of the conference, that will appear in the R5AS series.
