The Formularies of the Observant Franciscans in Hungary (c. 1451–c. 1554)

31 March 2022

For the first time, ‘The formularies of the Observant Franciscans in Hungary (c. 1451–c. 1554)’ have been published in a critical edition.

The texts in this volume are not only the primary sources of the rich culture of the late medieval Franciscans, but also the very significant sources of the history of the intellectual movements that preceded the Reformation in Hungary. So these are the texts from which the spiritual pages of the Peasant Revolt of 1514 can be understood.

The formularies clarify and deepen Jenő Szűcs’s vivid account of the part the Franciscans played in the 1514 Peasants’ Revolt. Without it, the history of the beginning of the Reformation cannot be studied.

The book was published by the Hungarian church historian Antal Molnár. He is the director of the Institute of History, Research Centre for the Humanities in Budapest, at the same time the member of the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences in Rome.
