On Philipp Melanchthon’s Concept of Body and Soul

In the context of his lectures on physics at the university of Wittenberg, Philipp Melanchthon (1497–1560) wrote two textbooks on the soul, establishing a new genre of commentary of Aristotle’s text De anima. The lecture shows the complex interaction of psychological, theological and medical knowledge in Melanchthon’s concept of soul, which opened the way to an early modern ‘science of man’.
